Verification & evidence

Verification

Establishing whether a claim is supported by independent evidence.

Definition

Verification is the process of testing a reported claim against multiple independent sources, ideally including a primary source — official statements, satellite imagery, first-hand reporting, court records, customs/maritime data. Verification is a status, not a finished state: new evidence can upgrade or downgrade it.

Why this matters when reading conflict news

Almost every consumer of conflict news skips this step. Knowing what verification actually requires changes how you read the next headline.
