Verification & evidence

Primary source

The originating document, image, or statement — not someone reporting on it.

Definition

A primary source is the originating evidence for a claim: a government communiqué, a court filing, raw satellite imagery, customs records, a maritime tracker reading, a sanctions list entry, a press conference transcript. Secondary sources report on primary sources.

Why this matters when reading conflict news

Reporting that links to primary sources is generally more trustworthy than reporting that does not. The absence of any primary source is itself a signal.
