Misinformation

False information shared without intent to deceive.

Definition

Misinformation is information that is incorrect but is being shared by someone who believes it. It is the everyday water of a fast-moving information environment — old footage misattributed, rumours promoted, errors repeated.

Why this matters when reading conflict news

Most factually wrong content during active conflict is misinformation, not disinformation. The remedy is different — corrections and context, not takedowns.
