Definition
Attribution is the analytical step of identifying the actor responsible for a specific incident. It applies to kinetic strikes, cyber operations, assassinations, leaks, and information campaigns. Attribution involves both technical evidence (weapons signatures, infrastructure, financial trails) and circumstantial evidence (motive, opportunity, prior behaviour).
Why this matters when reading conflict news
Many wartime stories pivot on attribution. "Iranian-made" is not the same as "Iranian"; "Iran-aligned" is not the same as "Iran-directed".
Common misunderstandings
- Hardware origin does not imply current operator.
- A claim of responsibility is evidence, not proof.
- Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence — and vice versa.
