Definition
Proxy warfare is the practice of one state supporting a non-state armed group, irregular force, or third-state actor to pursue political or military objectives without engaging its own forces directly. Support typically takes the form of weapons, training, intelligence sharing, financial backing, or political cover.
Why this matters when reading conflict news
Many headline-level "escalations" in the Middle East are mediated through proxies. The same incident can be framed as "an attack by group X" or "an attack by state Y via group X" depending on the framing.
Common misunderstandings
- Proxy support is rarely full control. Proxies pursue their own objectives in addition to their patron's.
- Calling a group a proxy is itself contested — the group will usually reject the label.
