Mediation

Third-party facilitation of dialogue between parties in conflict.

Definition

Mediation is the activity of a neutral or accepted third party helping disputants reach an agreement they could not reach directly. Mediators can be states (Qatar, Oman, Switzerland, Norway are frequent examples), international organisations, or individual envoys.

Why this matters when reading conflict news

Identifying the mediator is often the fastest way to triage whether a negotiation is serious. Some mediators only get invited when something is actually moving.
