Diplomacy & peace

Backchannel diplomacy

Negotiation conducted away from public view, often via third parties.

Definition

Backchannel diplomacy refers to communications between parties — sometimes between adversaries with no formal relations — conducted through intermediaries, private envoys, or unannounced meetings. The point is to test positions without committing publicly.

Why this matters when reading conflict news

Most de-escalations in modern Middle East crises happen through backchannels long before the public deal is announced. Public-statement analysis alone misses them.
